About an hour's drive from the company's headquarters in Guangzhou, China, sits a test site for Ehang's autonomous aerial vehicles. Perched on the tarmac during CNBC's visit was the company's fully autonomous, two-seater air taxi. Its scheduling system runs on the server, so its route is automatically loaded, and then it carries out a completely automated route flight." Because of this other aircraft, we also need to build a vertical take-off and landing flight site between cities," Wang said. BEIJING — Self-driving air taxis are one step closer to reality in China. Guangzhou-based Ehang on Friday said it received an airworthiness "type certificate" from the Civil Aviation Administration of China for its fully autonomous drone, the EH216-S AAV, that carries two human passengers. The regulator is the equivalent of the Federal Aviation Administration in the U.S.U.S.-listed Ehang claims it's the first in the world to get such a certificate, which allows it to fly passenger-carrying autonomous electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in China. Ehang shares have nearly doubled in price this year, before trading was temporarily halted Monday "in anticipation of an upcoming announcement concerning a very significant development regarding its business operations."

Since the 2003 end of Concorde, of course, flitting quickly across the Atlantic has been a thing of the past. Flights between London and New York take around eight hours, or closer to seven in the other direction. But now, the thought of supersonic travel has been mooted again – by none other than NASA, which reckons that New York-London flight could take as little as 90 minutes in the future. However, NASA is developing “quiet” supersonic aircraft, called X-59s, as part of its Quesst mission. Lockheed MartinSimilar studies to the ones done now, which were carried out a decade ago, shaped the development of the X-59 aircraft, according to Lori Ozoroski, project manager for NASA’s Commercial Supersonic Technology Project.

But the scope for surprises should be significantly diminished and they shouldn't result in significant operational challenges, as occurred in 2021," said S&P Global Ratings, in a report. "China's internet sector has emerged from its regulatory shakeup. Policymakers are signaling support and seem done with big legal changes or sweeping actions," said the report entitled "China's internet regulations: Fewer surprises, not zero surprises." China's crackdown on its large tech companies started in 2020, which saw the government imposing new regulations on tech.

Investors looking for cover this year would have done well if they sought a safe haven in large-cap pharmaceutical stocks, a trend that is likely to continue into 2023. The Inflation Reduction Act provided some clarity around drug pricing that should help health-care stocks. The average price target, according to FactSet, is $62, or nearly 40% above the stock's closing price on Tuesday.
